''संस्कृतं नाम दैवी वागन्वाख्याता महर्षिभिः।''

Sanskrit language is a priceless gift for India. Since the time immemorial Sanskrit has influenced the national life of our country. All literatures and culture of India are completely originated by Sanskrit. Sanskrit, which is highly regarded by the word 'Dev Vani' (God’s Words) still produce reverence in the hearts of Indians. It can be said effectively that even today Sanskrit is more influential and alive than Greek and Latin. Sanskrit language influences us more than that of English language. Our religious life is its certain proof. Sanskrit is a language in which for centuries there study, teaching and meditation have been done in sectors like philosophy, literature, fine arts, ethics, chemical, materials science, mathematics, space science, agriculture etc. Even today this knowledge is available in Sanskrit Granths. Vedas and Upanishads, Ramayana and Mahabharata, Geeta and Bhagwat are still nationwide famous. The nature of our deities, the process of construction and the introduction to pilgrimage sites are found in this language. All the sacraments and other countless religious rituals of our caste, sub-caste and marriage are executed in Sanskrit. Regardless to whether Sanskrit is not used in the various sectors or in the court, but it is our cultural language, our specific literature has been written in it. Most of the Jain granths are in Sanskrit and Prakrat. When Buddhists originated their granths in Pali and Sanskrit, its effect reflected on the professional and social life. Maximum of regional languages are originated from Sanskrit Language. If the ayurveda and astrology of Sanskrit are the paths of hundreds of knowledge and livelihoods, then they are also way of health and the means of pleasure to the lots of sufferers. Even today the troubled human finds the ways of solution through Purana, Karmkand. Various Sanskrit literatures are influential literature and have the ability to influence others as well. The same excellence of literature has attracted the western minds of Germany, France, Holland, Australia, Italy, England and America. In last 100 years discipline and research took place of Sanskrit, it has specified the significance of this literature in front of the world and has given the phenomena of its study.

Knowledge of Sanskrit is also necessary to understand Culture of India. Summary interpretation of history of ancient India is incomplete without the study of Sanskrit literature. Most of the ancient inscriptions are done in Sanskrit. For Indian archeology, knowledge of Sanskrit is absolutely essential. Indian philosophy is only in Sanskrit. Hence, it can be said that the history of Sanskrit literature has been the history of the mental and intellectual development of our ancestors in last four thousand years, in which the vivid portrait of spiritual, moral, social, practical and political life of ancient India is available. The Literature in whose origin, study and contemplation best brains and experts of India have been engaged for centuries and even today for which the experts of country and abroad are curious to get the knowledge, for such language and literature every Indian must respect and should be curious.

For the systematic communication of Sanskrit knowledge, the first Sanskrit University is established in Varanasi. But this effort was mostly confined to the field of Sanskrit-education and due to this the requirements of Sanskrit dissemination could not be reasonably met. Now for the study of Indian Culture and in the direction of conservation of ancient language and literature a new initiative has been taken and resulting to which to preserve, promote and develop Sanskrit, Paali and Prakrat on 31 December, 1976 Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Sansthan has been established through Government Order No. 10491/चार-7 (1)/76 dated 31.12.76. Earlier name of this Institute was Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Academy. Presently, the institute's office is located at the Girarhar Bhavan on Rai Bihari Lal Marg in New Hyderabad, Lucknow.
